The Struggle Towards Self Government.
The Struggle towards self government was difficult. The Malaysian Communist party tried to take over Singapore and Malay by force. They Issued a state emergency which lasted for 12 years. By the end of 1953, British government wanted Sir George Randel to look over Singapore's constitution to figure out what to do next. The government said yes to the Randel proposes and they were the base of a new constitution. Singapore held an election in 1955 and it was their "first lively political contest." Mr. David Marshall won the election and was Singapore's first Chief Minister on April 6th 1955. But, on June 6th, 1956, he resigned because of his dismay with " the breakdown of constitutional talks in London." Mr. Lim Yew took over after he resigned. In March of 1959, the first general election was held to choose 51 representatives. The PAP ( People's Action Party) won 43 of those seats. On June 3rd, the new constitution affirmed Singapore as a self governing state.
