Merging with Malaya.
On the 27th of May 1961, the Malayan Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman suggested a "merger to foster closer political and economic co-operation between the Federation of Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak, North Borneo and Brunei "Tunku Abdul Rahman and Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew agreed the main terms of the merger. The terms included Central government responsibility for defense, foreign affairs-internal security, and local autonomy in education and labor. In Singapore one September 1st 1962, a poll on the terms of the merger took place. People were very supportive of it. On September 16th 1963, Malaysia was formed, they compromised " the Fedration of Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak and north Borneo (Sabah). Brunei was out, Indonesia and the Philippines opposed the merger."
